Self-Service Facilities

Many library materials from close access stack have now been placed on new shelves. Most circulating items may either be requested via the catalogue or fetched from the shelf and borrowed at the circulation desk, information desk, or self-checkout machines. Also, there are book lockers available in the secure entrance area.  Circulating materials requested via catalogue will be put on hold for the user in one of these lockers. The locker system and our library system are integrated: the book will be lent to the user as soon as the locker door open after having scanned the user’s ID card.

Self-checkout machines are available on the ground level and 1st  floor of the library.  Users can check out or renew books yourself  and return the books to the drop-in box next to the  main entrance.

Collecting request from the lockers.

Since the founding of the Medical University of Lodz in 2002, as a result of the merger of two medical academies – civilian and military – the Medical Library combines the collected medical texts of both institutions.

In February 2016 Former Library of the Medical University in Lodz changed its name to the Information and Library Center. As the old building underwent extensive restoration to expand workspace, the library staff  shares the  upgraded premises with other University departments such as the Center for Innovation and Transfer of Technology, the Bureau of the Science, Strategy and Development, and the University’s Archives.

The Information and Library Center of the Medical University of Lodz is a sub unit of the University charged with providing complex scientific and didactic services, while serving as a public library of sciences, in accordance with the Statute of the Medical University since 29th September 2011.

The Information and Library Center’s main task is the creation, maintenance and modernization of the research workshop for the scientific – teaching staff of the University, providing books and learning aides as well as supplemental reading materials for the students, participation in post-degree training, and library – informational support for the health care employees from Lodz and the region.

The assembled materials correspond to the wide range of disciplines taught at the University: Medicine, Pharmacy, Stomatology, Nursing, Health Sciences, Army Medicine, Physical Therapy, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Biotechnology, Genetics, Hygiene, Clinical Psychology, Dietetics, Sociology, Philosophy, Ethics, Bioethics etc.

ILC constantly enlarges its collection of materials through the purchase and subscription of books, Polish and foreign (paper and electronic versions) as well as gifts and exchange. The assembled materials are upgraded constantly, with a permanent control system ensuring the correlation between the database information and the materials available.

ILC holds scientific books, including textbooks for students, subscribes to printed biomedical journal titles as well as provides access to a wide variety of  Polish and foreign subscription databases, electronic journals and e-books to its users.

We are presenting a digital materials assembly on the Internet: Lodz Regional Digital Library CYBRA ( ). The available publications (old prints etc.) are indexed and accessible through the internet search engines on article level.

The Library participates in the consortium of the university libraries – Lodz Academic Library Network, created in order to establish a common system for automated library work and creating a central catalogue of the materials assembled in the Lodz scientific libraries.

The library also offers courses in Library Studies and Library Training for freshman students of all majors as well as Scientific Information courses for students in PhD studies.
